Let's Get Caught Up...

So....It's been a little bit since we updated our ranch life adventure...like a couple of years. John and I moved back to Idaho in the summer of 2018! We moved our whole lives, including the cattle! That is a whole story in itself...it took us a few days but the cattle made it to Salmon. We officially made Melba our home the summer of 2019, a small rural farming and ranching community in Southwestern Idaho with a population of 500 ish. I am working for the school as the ag teacher and FFA advisor (going on year three and five years of teaching) and John is the feed/mill manager at Wilson Creek Feeders LLC. When we first arrived in Southwest Idaho, John started out doing odd maintenance type jobs, then moved up to pen rider and finally landed the manager position.

This spring, the cattle are still in Salmon, running on my dad's place. After our wedding, Roy and Sharron Hoffman gifted us with a bred heifer rightfully named "KJ" - she had a calf last year, but unfortunately caught a nasty bug and died. All of the Kansas girls and KJ were bred and so far we are just waiting on Twoey also now called "Bully" by my dad and "Roany" but our calf watchers. We have the greatest calf watchers this year!!! My ag teacher from high school as well as a group of neighbor kids and their mom. They can see our pasture from their house and update us anytime their is baby action in the field! So far, every time the Kansas girls have dropped a calf, the neighbor kids have seen it, been a part of the tagging and early calf care. They are the greatest! We even face timed when baby Donnie (also called Licker by my dad) had her calf. She was the first one of the Kansas girls to have a calf.

It has been a crazy exciting process. Of course, all of the calves have names! We are so thankful for the Hoffman's, without them, calving season 2020 would not have been possible!

This summer has a lot of new things happening for us that are in the works. I have officially decided that beef will be more of a priority in our lives and to be more serious with what our future holds in the cattle industry. So far, I have been accepted to attend the Young Cattlemen's Convention to learn more about the industry. I even have started more agriculture advocacy through Melba FFA's Facebook page - every week I find an agriculture book and activity to make a live video. They are pretty fun!

Enjoy the pictures of this year, and I promise to update more about our lives as first generation cattle producers - I'll even start posting beef recopies and links to videos. What to know something specific about our adventure? Message me! I would love to take requests!

-With love, Kellsie
